Oakland Raiders would be stupid to not start Phillip Adams

I’ve been saying it for months, but I’ll say it again… Phillip Adams is the most underrated cornerback in the NFL.

The Oakland Raiders got a taste of what Adams can bring to the table last season when he picked off future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and made a significant impact despite limited snaps. He earned his way into the rotation late in the season and never looked back.

Now, headed into his second campaign in Oakland, Adams could finally find his way onto the NFL radar.

The Raiders are looking to avoid going winless this season, and need to make sure that Adams is a part of their defensive game plan. Even though they possess arguably the worst roster in the league, Oakland has enjoyed having one bright spot in the secondary over the last couple of months.

Throughout the 2013 preseason, Adams is the only cornerback in the NFL to see significant coverage snaps who hasn’t given up a single reception. In 34 coverage opportunities, not a single throw that has gone in his direction has ended in a catch. For a player seen as a No. 3 or No. 4 cornerback, that’s an impressive feat.

What makes Adams an even better candidate to start for the Raiders is the fact that he excels in run defense. In 44 run defense snaps, he has racked up nine total tackles while amassing a 1.8 run defense rating, one of the highest from a cornerback according to Pro Football Focus.

While the rest of the Raiders’ cornerbacks – including veterans Mike Jenkins and Tracy Porter and rookie D.J. Hayden – have struggled this preseason, Adams has been a reliable cover man for the silver and black. Even if the Raiders opt to start Hayden simply because he’s a first-round pick, Adams deserves to see more snaps to start the season than either of the aforementioned veterans.

At some point this season, people will start to understand why Adams is considered one of the most underrated cornerbacks in the NFL. That is, if the Raiders avoid making the moronic move of keeping him on the bench.
