Steady WR Jason Avant Just What Philadelphia Eagles Need
The Philadelphia Eagles offense is full of high profile stars just waiting to break the next headline. Starting behind center with veteran quarterback Michael Vick, his versatility, elusiveness, and athletic ability still, even at 33 years of age, can create problems for any defense. Probably his favorite aerial target, high octane DeSean Jackson, is capable of stealing the show at any time, be it through his deep threat speed or his antics in completing heroic plays. As if those two don’t create enough matchup problems for an opposing team, add to the mix All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy. One of the league’s best cutback runners, his ability to shake tacklers and make them miss creates highlight reels at a moment’s notice. The three together are a fantasy owner’s dream. But with all the hype and attention being drawn to these players, what the Eagles really need is a grounded, reliable veteran who can take the heat and stay in the kitchen. Enter, Jason Avant.
Avant has been with the Eagles since being drafted in the 4th round in 2006. He has developed into one of the best, if not the best, slot receiver in the game. Jason has made steady the word that best describes him, being a go to receiver on third down situations because of his ability to hold onto the ball. He just does what is asked, getting open and catching balls thrown his way. Although Avant has more recently gained recognition for his ability to grab passes with one hand, being in the spotlight doesn’t affect his play in either direction. Regardless of his personal performance he is known to still go about his business on a daily basis.
With the slew of young rising stars that Philadelphia has been blessed with, Avant is the glue helping to keep this team heading in the right direction. His example through his work ethic and dedication is something that the young players can learn from and respect. Coach Chip Kelly could not be luckier than to have a guy with such commitment to getting better and winning. One of the veteran leaders, Avant is just what this Eagles team may need to keep the young players’ feet on the ground and keep this team moving forward as the season progresses.
