While Bobby Rainey was the star of the Baltimore Ravens‘ preseason closer against the St. Louis Rams, it was Tandon Doss who had a statement to make. With all the pundits, critics and haters constantly predicting Doss will not make the 53-man roster, Doss sent a clear message to Ravens Nation as well as to his head coach John Harbaugh that if given opportunity, he will shine.
Constant reports were coming in on Doss saying that he got demoted on the depth chart and how he may not be on the Ravens roster come this regular season. His sub-par preseason performances against the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons were enough to make Ravens’ fans go into complete panic. Many were quick to jump on the bandwagon of other receivers on the depth chart. Doss’ preseason disappearing act pushed Ravens to even bring in veteran Brandon Stokley. It was no secret that the team did not trust in Doss.
I’m not saying that Thursday night’s performance changes everything, but Doss had to show up. Coaches know his potential and they constantly see him shine in practice, however his production was not translating over well to game action. In my opinion they were not giving Doss the right opportunities to excel. His “bread and butter” is over the middle from the slot. The majority of the preseason his limited reps mostly had him doing out-routes, and when they did give him an inside slant over the middle they were going deep to an outside receiver.
This recent showing of five catches for 75 yards came in second to Marlon Brown’s four for 79 and a TD, but the way Doss played tonight may have secured him a roster spot. Look for more Doss sightings during the regular season as this opportunist will be in the rotation.
