Bennie Logan has been a force inside at the nose tackle position for the Philadelphia Eagles. Logan has been getting push in the run game and pressure on the Quarterback when he drops backs to throw.
Despite being a rookie Logan is really making a case to start inside at the Nose Tackle position in Billy Davis’ defense. He is battling veteran nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga for that job. Sopoaga frankly hasn’t been very impressive. He isn’t drawing double teams and is a complete non-factor as a pass rusher.
I wouldn’t be surprised frankly if he was cut and the Eagles scoured the waiver wire for a back up nose tackle. Davis, however, may value Sopoaga’s veteran presence on the defense.
The young players on the defensive line look like the strength of the football team. This is a minor surprise. Everyone knew Fletcher Cox was an ascending young talent capable of big things. Many of the other players though were unknowns. Logan, Cedric Thornton, and Vinny Curry have all really come on in the pre-season.
While some other aspects of the defense remain major concerns, the defensive line has quelled any concerns about the front seven. Logan will be the nose tackle sooner or later. He is simply playing too well to be taken off the field and not be given a proper amount of snaps.
To me, there is no sense in delaying the inevitable. Sopoaga doesn’t look like he has anything left in the tank. Logan’s won the job. Might as well give it to him.
