Detroit Lions Roster Cuts: How Releasing Havard Rugland Could Haunt the Team

The Detroit Lions attempted to create a little competition at the kicker position this summer. Norwegian-born Havard Rugland has an incredible talent when it comes to kicking a football — or any ball for that matter.

Rugland released a YouTube video last year entitled “Kickalicious” and if you have not seen it yet, by all means, you absolutely have to watch it. Rugland is shown making kicks that you would never even imagine as humanly possible. Not only can he kick it through the uprights, but he can kick a football accurately to a friend of his in a moving car, running across a football field or even across a canyon.

This preseason and throughout training camp, Rugland had been competing with Lions’ veteran kicker David Akers for a spot on the team. He performed very well throughout practice and preseason play, having connected on all three of his attempts in game actions including a 50-yard chip shot.

Unfortunately for Rugland, the Lions released him. However, his dream of kicking in the NFL may not be over just yet. Rugland tweeted Friday that he had a workout with the Green Bay Packers and that it went well.

If Rugland’s unbelievable talent proves to be even more real for the Packers than it was to the Lions’ organization, he may wind up haunting Detroit in the future. With the Packers still unsure about Mason Crosby after his wavering performances last year, Rugland may have a shot to find his way onto either the practice squad or roster in the future.
