New York Giants’ DT Marvin Austin Says Players Are Eager to Sack Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow

You know there has to be a good chunk of NFL players who hate Tim Tebow‘s guts. Maybe they don’t dislike him as a person, but they certainly can’t like the fact that a third-string quarterback gets so much attention. Most third-stringers are unknowns to fans and it’s pretty safe to assume that Tebow is the most popular bench warmer in the league (if he even makes the New England Patriots‘ final roster).

After a decent showing in the Pats’ preseason finale, Tebow is still in the running to be one of 53 players to make New England’s final roster. But during his performance on Thursday night, the left-handed quarterback took several lumps. Tebow was sacked four times and lost 35 yards in the process.

New York Giants defensive tackle Marvin Austin was not among those who got to Tebow on Thursday night, but he had this to say on how players feel about sacking the popular QB:

“Oh, of course. They’re trying to go out there, get a sack, and do the Tebow. That’s what everybody was talking about going out there, putting their hands around Tebow, because he’s a guy who’s gotten a lot of media attention and stuff like that. You know, if you’re going to try to make a team, you go out there and put your hands around him, you could get your name out there.”

Austin is right, a player could could gain some notoriety by sacking Tebow. I don’t know if it’s a big enough deal to be the difference in a player making a roster or not, but anybody who mocks the QB with his own pose, is definitely going to get some publicity. As far as the players being eager to sack him, that’s not surprising in the least.
