Philadelphia Eagles Need To End The Casey Matthews Experiment
The Philadelphia Eagles felt like they were able to add a solid bloodline to their organization after the 2011 NFL Draft. Andy Reid and company were able to draft Casey Matthews with the 116th overall pick in the fourth round, and felt as if he could fill a void at the middle linebacker position.
Well, that didn’t work out too well, as we all know.
Matthews was unable to adapt to the NFL early in his career as he was thrown into the starting line-up from day one of training camp. Reid believed he would be able to resemble his older brother Clay Matthews as a ferocious defender and become a stud middle linebacker. Well, Matthews looked lost every time he set foot on field, and was even getting burned in coverage by running backs that weren’t even known for their route-running or speed (Brandon Jacobs).
Midway through his rookie year, Matthews was benched and was never able to prove to the coaches he belonged on the field. He served as a backup in 2012 and mainly played special teams as the season went on. Well, Reid was eventually fired after the 2012 season and Matthews was once again reunited with his former college coach Chip Kelly, who coached him at Oregon prior to the 2013 NFL season.
However, Matthews was still unable to impress even the new coaches, and now the Eagles simply can’t afford to keep him any longer.
Not only should the lack of talent cost Matthews a roster spot, but the young guys behind them have shown more potential in a few preseason games than Matthews had in the past two seasons. Jake Knott and Emmanuel Acho have been playing great football for the Eagles and should absolutely be a part of this team moving forward.
I really had high hope for Matthews when he was drafted and thought he could be a solid player as he progressed, but he simply has not been able to shine for this team. Matthews should be able to find another team that needs a backup middle linebacker, but his days in Philadelphia are numbered as the final roster cuts is one day away.
