Houston Texans Roster Cuts: The Final 53
The Final 53
Here we are.
After months of speculation and predictions, teams have all gotten down to the league requirement of 53 men on the 2013 NFL roster for each team. For the Houston Texans, a few minor surprises here and there, but no big upsets or shockers like in previous years.
Probably the biggest story of the final 53-man roster is that four undrafted free agents made the squad while some of the drafted talent did not. This just goes to show that Houston is in win-now mode and think that their window is open and they need to keep the absolute best players on the field, regardless of draft status.
It also shows that guys are no longer going to get a shot if they're past their first couple of seasons and are being outplayed by others at their position. This is the problem good teams have. Other teams want your players and even those who can't make your final 53 usually pick up somewhere else.
It has been a long and sometimes arduous journey for this franchise to build this roster, as just a few short years ago when they cut a player, you'd never hear from him again.
With all of the roster cuts and IR placements finished, here is a look at the 2013 Houston Texans for the time being. I say that because this is subject to change if a veteran cut from another team is better than someone near the bottom of the 53. Stay tuned, but take a look at the final card.
T. J. Yates
No real surprises here, as it was a foregone conclusion a couple of weeks ago that the team would be carrying all three quarterbacks.
Delano Johnson Deji Karim Tyler Clutts
The battle for the third running back was a roller coaster. Once thought to be imminent for Dennis Johnson, Deji Karim took the lead for a couple of weeks before Cierre Wood stole it with a strong performance in the preseason finale.
Wide Receivers & Tight Ends
Alan Bonner (IR) Ez Nwachukwu Alec Lemon (IR) Andy Cruse
Clearly the biggest story here is the miraculous recovery of DeVier Posey. Most figured he would begin the season on the PUP list, but in being ready for Week 1, he pushes off one of the hopefuls for the fifth wide receiver spot.
Brennan Williams (IR)
Alex Kupper Tyler Horn Nate Menkin
A couple of surprises here with Cody White and Andrew Gardner sticking around. Brennan Williams to the IR is the likely reason why. Hopefully the team will have more success in their attempt to stash Nate Menkin on the practice squad after attempting to last year and failing.
Roc Carmichael Elbert Mack
Jawanza Starling Orhain Johnson
Being a victim of the numbers game and having his lunch stolen by A.J. Bouye, time simply ran out for Roc Carmichael. I still believe he has the tools to play at this level and he's likely to pick up somewhere else.
Delano Johnson Mike Mohammed Cameron Collins
Trevardo Williams (IR)
Both Willie Jefferson and Justin Tuggle are good stories and earned their spot on the roster after Trevardo Williams was placed on the IR. A lot of question marks at the outside position going forward.
Keith Browner Daniel Muir Chris Jones
It's a pretty tight group here after the team reached an injury settlement with Daniel Muir. Here's to hoping this bunch can stay healthy, because there isn't much depth.
* One Game Suspension
With no competition currently on the roster for these three, this was the easiest picks to predict. If preseason performance is any indication, this is easily the best kicking crew Houston has ever had.
