Minnesota Vikings’ Rumors: Antoine Winfield Nearing Return to Purple?
What was your favorite Antoine Winfield as a Seattle Seahawk moment? According to multiple reports going around today as teams try to make their final roster cuts and trim their rosters down to the required 53 men, Winfield may be on his way out of Seattle. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS, the former Minnesota Vikings cornerback will be released by Seattle later today. While nothing is official as of yet, this rumor has been floating out there for the past few weeks according to KFAN 100.3 out of Minneapolis. Seattle is deep at the cornerback position and Winfield has found himself on the outside looking in in terms of finding playing time and carving out a major role in the secondary. With that in mind, could Winfield be open to a possible return to the purple and gold?
The possibility of Winfield returning to the Vikings is a realistic and likely option simply for the fact that Winfield is already comfortable with the Vikings’ defensive scheme and the Vikings aren’t solidified in the secondary by any means. Young corners like Josh Robinson and Xavier Rhodes could benefit from working under Winfield’s mentorship for another year which—in itself—may be enough of a reason for the Vikings to aggressively pursue Winfield if he indeed is cut; but the question will remain: does Winfield want to come back and at what price?
If Winfield is cut, it is unknown what kind of market, and what kind of role, will be available for him at this point in the season. With the Vikings, his role would be very similar to what it was last year and he would be a welcomed addition in the locker room. In addition, Winfield’s return would excite a fan base that was stunned and saddened by the way things ended with Winfield this past March; however, one hurdle to this possible dream scenario of a reunion could be Winfield’s feelings about being cut this past March. If Winfield still feels bitter about the way things ended and if he is too prideful, this scenario could be ruined; however, if Winfield wants to go out on his own terms by playing a significant role—likely as a nickel or dime corner—in a place where he is comfortable and can play fast, the Vikings are a perfect fit.
Final roster cuts will be posted at some point this afternoon; make sure to keep an eye towards Seattle. If Winfield is cut today, this situation could develop quickly and Winfield may be back in purple before the weekend is over. Stay tuned.
