New Orleans Saints Roster Cuts: Courtney Roby Does Not Make the Final Cut

Teams are finalizing their 53-man rosters and some surprising cuts have been made. So far, the New Orleans Saints’ cuts have not been too surprising, but that was until it was announced today that wide receiver Courtney Roby was cut from the team. This has been the most surprising cut so far for the Saints.

Roby has been with the Saints since 2008 and had become the team’s best special teams player. Furthermore, Roby had been named a captain for the past two seasons, which makes his release even more surprising. During his tenure with the Saints Roby did not play much at wide receiver, but was a return man for a few seasons. However, Roby made his living on the special teams in the return game as well as the kickoff team.

With Roby’s departure, it would seem that the Saints are looking to have wide receiver Preston Parker on the final 53-man roster. Parker is essentially a younger version of Roby and he had a very strong preseason. Parker not only showed that he was a reliable receiver, but he showed that he was great as a kick returner. With Roby gone, do not be surprised if the Saints do keep Parker and put him in Roby’s old role.

Now that Roby is released, there is a chance that another team will show some interest and pick him up. Roby is a competent receiver and does so many things on special teams. This may be the end of Roby’s time with the Saints, but I don’t think it is the end of his time in the NFL.
