The New Orleans Saints have trimmed their roster down to 53, and there were definitely some surprising cuts made. The most notable cuts were quarterback Ryan Griffin and wide receivers Courtney Roby and Preston Parker. Griffin seemed like a lock to be the Saints’ third-string quarterback and be groomed to eventually succeed Drew Brees.
However, the Saints will stick Brees and Luke McCown as their top two quarterbacks.
Even though Griffin was released, he could come back to the Saints on the practice squad. Another player that could join Griffin on the practice squad is Parker. Parker might have been the most surprising cut as the news came after the team already cut Roby.
With Roby being cut, many thought that Parker would surely make the roster and take over his role. However, the Saints felt comfortable letting go of both Parker and Roby.
Roby’s days as a Saint may be done, but Parker could make a return on the Saints’ practice squad. Roby and Parker both got beat out by wide receiver Andy Tanner for a roster spot. With Tanner in the fold, the Saints’ wide receiver corps is extremely deep, and the offense should be one of the best in the NFL this season.
The Saints also let go of many linebackers which they probably could have used. The Saints are dealing with many injuries on the defensive line, and any depth would have been helpful for the team. Perhaps the Saints are not done making moves, but some of the moves they made today sure were shocking.
