Philadelphia Eagles Roster Cuts: Chip Kelly Chooses His Final 53 Men
The Philadelphia Eagles have completed their 53-man roster for the 2013 season at last, axing their final nine prospective contributors just minutes ago.
While some athletes were more-or-less just waiting to get called to the coach’s office on Saturday, many players were still battling tooth-and-nail with their peers for a chance at NFL glory. While some of these final cuts will be signed back to the Birds’ practice squad, and some will be scooped up on waivers by other teams, it is the end of the road for many when it comes to their NFL dreams.
It certainly isn’t easy to carve a nearly 100-man off-season roster into a 53-man best of the best, but this is a big boy’s game, and there is no crying in football.
Some of the more surprising cuts made by the Eagles over the past couple days came at the wide receiver position as they decided to part ways with WRs Russell Shepard and Ifeanyi Momah (among others). Momah is a fantastic physical specimen, standing at nearly 6′ 8″, and Shepard is an incredibly versatile, athletic young burner who truly has unlimited potential. But the Eagles only wished to keep five wide-outs in their corps, choosing WRs DeSean Jackson, Riley Cooper, Damaris Johnson, Jason Avant and Jeff Maehl to round up their unit.
There were a few more iffy cuts in Philly, including the axing of LB Chris McCoy, who was regarded as one of the more impressive acquisitions early in training camp. And somehow S Kurt Coleman kept his roster spot after continuously getting burned and humiliated last season.
Well, Chip Kelly now has his top men selected, primed and ready to light a fire up under this previously stagnant Eagles offense.
Here is the laundry-list of prospective Eagles cut over the past two days: OT Michael Bamiro, LB Everette Brown, DT Antonio Dixon, QB Dennis Dixon, TE Clay Harbor, DE David King, QB G.J. Kinne, OL Matt Kopa, CB Trevard Lindley, LB Travis Long, LB McCoy, WR Momah, WR Will Murphy, OL Dallas Reynolds, LB Adrian Robinson, WR Greg Salas, WR Shepard, S David Sims, OL Matt Tennant, RB Matthew Tucker, OG Danny Watkins.
