5 New York Giants Cut Victims Who Deserved a Roster Spot

A Giant Miss for a Few New York Giants Players

The New York Giants aren't know for cutting big named players. Big blue doesn't cut too many guys before the mandatory cut down to a 53-man roster. However, this year appears to be different.

For a team that's hosting the Super Bowl in 2014, the Giants want to be a part of the occasion. It's pretty rare that the Super Bowl is in the northern part of the United States, let alone in New York. Think about it, who wants to watch the biggest game of the NFL season in freezing temperatures?

The Giants are looking to make a return to the postseason after an abysmal 2012 season. Even though the Giants played better defensively than they did during their Super Bowl championship campaign, the Giants offense was plagued by numerous injuries throughout the season. However, the team's management has made sure this year's roster will surely contend for a playoff spot.

The NFC East surely won't be easy this year. The Washington Redskins are going to be quite strong as will the Dallas Cowboys (as long as Tony Romo plays to expectation). With a defense as strong as the Giants should have once again, expect them to step up their game in 2013. With several key players gone, they'll have some younger, quicker guys take over which is exactly what the team needed.

5. Marvin Austin

Marvin Austin was cut by the Giants for several reasons. One of those being his health. After missing the entire 2011 season due to injury, he returned in 2012 and got hurt again. He's also extremely overweight which is another health concern which the Giants can't afford to risk. However, he was quite impressive during the preseason with a sack and three tackles. He's going to end up somewhere as the former second-round pick is trying to get his feet set in the NFL.

4. David Caldwell

David Caldwell is a former Indianapolis Colts player and had 62 tackles back in 2011. The Giants could have used a Safety such as Caldwell on their team, but they cut ties with him since they have Antrel Rolle and Ryan Mundy on the roster. However, Caldwell could have been a decent fit for the team just in case these guys got injured.

3. Ryan Torain

The former Redskins Running Back was on the Giants' roster in 2012, but only played in two games. Coach Tom Coughlin didn't give Ryan Torain much playing time, but with Michael Cox and Da'Rel Scott on the roster, it just wasn't worth it for the team to keep a fifth Running Back. Torain deserved a spot on the team considering he has some experience combined with the fact that he's seen regular playing time in the past.

2. Ramses Barden

The Giants have been trying to find solid Wide Receivers for quite some time now. They just let go of Ramses Barden who's been with them since being drafted in 2009. Barden never received much playing time and it's probably because he had 19 dropped passes in 48 targets over the past four seasons. Though Eli Manning was willing to work with Barden, the Giants management didn't want to give him another chance. Barden should've been retained, but the they signed Louis Murphy and have Jarrel Jernigan as they're hopeful future star.

1. David Carr

We all know backup QB's don't play too much, especially when your starter hasn't missed a game since 2004. Well, David Carr has been a solid backup for Eli Manning and the Giants have let him go. Carr played an immense role in helping Manning become the solid passer that he is today. Unfortunately, the Giants signed Curtis Painter who was flat out horrific with the Colts once Peyton Manning was injured two years ago. Throwing six touchdowns and nine interceptions isn't what the Giants need on their team. Carr was able to provide confidence for the team just in case Manning got hurt. Now, they won't have that confidence and will pray Manning's health is as good as ever.
