Releasing Emmanuel Acho Will Be Costly For The Philadelphia Eagles
The move came as a surprise since Acho had a great preseason and dominated the Eagles’ preseason finale by registering 11 tackles, one sack, and a forced fumble. Acho looked like he could easily be the backup inside linebacker on the Eagles defense, but it doesn’t appear that way now.
The Eagles 53-man roster has DeMeco Ryans, Mychael Kendricks, Casey Matthews, Jake Knott, and now Goode. I think I speak for everyone that Ryans, Kendricks, and Knott should absolutely be on the 53-man roster, however, I do not understand why Matthews is still on this team. Acho was easily the better linebacker of the two and could probably be solid a special teams player. Not only does it come as a surprise that Matthews is still on the team, but it’s also a surprise that the Eagles think they would be better off with him on the team instead of Acho.
I don’t see this as a Howie Roseman move; I think this has a lot to do with Chip Kelly since Kelly was Matthews’ former coach at the University of Oregon. Kelly seems like he is banking on Matthews to somehow turn on the jets this season which I highly doubt he will. Matthews was able to secure a roster spot because, according to Roseman, he is a solid special teams player. However, the depth of the inside linebacker position is thin and Acho easily would have been a better solution than Matthews. Now the Eagles can still add him to the practice squad, but Acho deserves to be on the 53-man roster.
The Eagles are definitely banking on Ryans and Kendricks to stay healthy because Matthews simply can’t get the job down at inside linebacker. Yes he is a good special teams player, but he has yet to prove to anyone he can fill a void on defense which is why this move might be costly for the Eagles.
