Dallas Cowboys Trim Roster, but Who Deserved to Stay?
The Dallas Cowboys trimmed their roster to the final 53 men on Saturday. I realize that the Cowboys are looking for the best 53 men that they have, just like every other team in the NFL, however, I have to say I was shocked at some of the cuts that were made. I feel that Dallas could have kept some of the players that were cut, instead of keeping some of the ones that they kept.
I have to say that I was surprised that the Cowboys only decided to keep five wide receivers. I figured that Anthony Armstrong would make this roster. Armstrong probably wouldn’t have seen much time as a receiver, but he was the fastest player on this team, and he definitely could have helped in the return game. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cowboys resigned Armstrong later in the season.
I feel like Micah Pellerin was making a name for himself in the defensive backfield. While he had room to improve, he definitely could have contributed to the team this season. The Cowboys decided to waive Pellerin and keep Matt Johnson, who is headed to injured reserve for the second straight season. I am a fan of Johnson, but he hasn’t been able to stay on the field. I think Pellerin would have been an asset in the defensive backfield this season.
The Cowboys are very thin at offensive tackle. They currently have three on the 53-man roster. I think they should have kept Ray Dominguez, even if it is just for some insurance at the tackle position. If anything, he would have been able to contribute more than Nate Livings. While Livings plays guard, the Cowboys have a few guards on their roster, and Livings has proven he can’t stay healthy.
Currently, Dallas has two centers on their roster. Travis Frederick is going to be the starter, and Phil Costa is going to be the backup. Costa was injury prone last season, and couldn’t even finish one game. I think Dallas should have given Kevin Kowalski a shot at the backup center spot. Dallas needs players on this roster who are going to be healthy; they can’t afford to keep players, and just hope they can stay healthy.
I think Sterling Moore deserved to be on the final roster this season. He came in last year, and was an immediate contributor to this team. The Cowboys are set with their starting corners, but I think Moore could have added some quality depth to the position.
It will be interesting to see if the Cowboys sign any of these players back later in the season, because I believe that all of them could have contributed to this team.
