New York Jets Finalize Practice Squad
The New York Jets have made the final additions to their eight man practice squad, filling it entirely with players who just missed the cut for the active roster. A few of these players could be called up if the man they lost out to doesn’t perform early in the season. The final practice squad is as follows:
WR Michael Campbell, TE Chris Pantale, OT J.B. Shugarts, C Dalton Freeman, DT Tevita Finau, OLB Troy Davis, ILB Danny Lansanah, S Rontez Miles
All of these players were close calls for the active roster, especially Shugarts and Finau. Lansanah actually made the team but was cut the next day to make room for waiver claims Alex Green, Ben Ijalana and Scott Solomon. Freeman was going to make the team until he injured his ankle, and the Jets didn’t want to lose out on him.
All of these players could have a future with the team, but the numbers just didn’t work out in their favor this season. However, the practice squad is a great way to stay involved in with an NFL organization and continue to have the opportunity to prove to the coaching staff that you are ready for the responsibility of being on the active roster.
Obviously, there isn’t star potential among these players, and most of them will never crack the active roster. However, these are simply names to keep in the back of your mind as the season progresses and injuries take their toll. Every team has one or two players on the practice squad with a good amount of potential, and Campbell and Miles appear to be the prime candidates for the Jets.
For these players, the challenge is getting the chance to play in a real game, and the practice squad is their best shot at proving they are worthy of that opportunity.
