5 Reasons The San Francisco 49ers Will Lose Week 1

5 Reasons The San Francisco 49ers Will Lose Week 1
Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY

The San Francisco 49ers open their season against the Green Bay Packers for the second year in a row. Last year, it was a 30-22 victory in the not-yet frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. This year, they host the Packers in the friendly confines of Candlestick Park.

The 49ers have spent all offseason hearing how good they are. Much of that is warranted as they are near the top of the NFL pecking order heading into the season, but their Week 1 matchup against the Packers will be one of the toughest tests they face all year.

The Packers, despite their disappointing 11-5 finish last year, are still one of the better teams in the league. They have one of the best quarterbacks, an experienced coach and a capable defense. That defense was torched by Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers' offense last year, but this year will be different.

This year, the Green Bay coaching staff has had all offseason to strategize the ways they can slow down Kaepernick and the read-option offense. One obvious way would be to stop playing man-to-man coverage. Everyone who’s ever played Madden can tell you that’s a death sentence against a running quarterback.

The Packers will have those issues cured on Sunday. They’ve had more than six months to figure out the 49ers. This weekend, they’ll get their shot at revenge on the team that both started and ended their 2012 season with losses.

There are plenty of reasons to like the 49ers this season. They have one of the best young quarterback/coach combos in the league. They’re set up for a long run of success, but the Packers will give them more than they can handle this week.

5. Aaron Rodgers Is Still One Of The Best Quarterbacks In The League

I might have called him the best quarterback in the league until Peyton Manning reminded us all he still holds the title until he decides to walk away.

Even though he may not be the best anymore, Rodgers is still a force when he gets the chance to orchestrate the high-flying Green Bay offense. The 49ers will need to keep pace with their offense -- not an easy thing to do against Rodgers.

4.Not Enough Weapons For Colin Kaepernick To Throw To

The 49ers made one of the better offseason trades when they stole Anquan Boldin away from the Baltimore Ravens. Boldin will give Kaepernick a reliable option down the middle of the field, but after him, you start to struggle to find receivers that will strike fear in the hearts of the Green Bay defenders.

San Francisco relies on their tight ends to stretch the field, but the Packers will keep them in check. If Kaepernick and the 49ers are going to put up enough points to keep pace with Rodgers and the Packers, they're going to need big games out of unproven receivers like Kyle Williams and Quinton Patton.

3. Eddie Lacy Will Make The Packers Offense Even Better

The Packers have been searching for a running game to compliment their potent passing attack since Rodgers and the receivers started tearing the league apart. This year, they bring in second-round pick Eddie Lacy from the University of Alabama to be the No. 1 back. The Packers will count on Lacy to bring balance to their offense, which is already one of the most dangerous units in the NFL.

2. They're Starting A Rookie At Safety

If you're going to beat the Packers, you're going to need to stop their passing attack. They like to spread the field with four and five wide receiver sets. That means you need your safeties to be solid in their coverage. The 49ers will give the starting nod at free safety this week to rookie Eric Reid. A playmaker from LSU, Reid has huge upside for San Francisco this year. Unfortunately, that upside won't help him this week against one of the best passing teams in the league.

They say there are three speeds in the NFL — preseason speed, regular season speed and playoff speed. Reid has seen preseason speed, now he's going to get his first taste of regular season speed from one of the fastest passing offenses in the game.

1. The Packers Have Been Thinking About Getting Revenge All Offseason

The Packers came into last season as one of the favorites to play in the Super Bowl. They may have lived up to that hype if it weren't for the 49ers. After losing to them in the first week of the season, Green Bay came full circle when they ended their season with a loss to them in the playoffs.

Those two losses ensured that the Green Bay players and coaches would spend all offseason dreaming of getting revenge against the one team they couldn't get past last year. The NFL schedule makers granted them their wish, serving up the 49ers in the first week of the season once again. This is the chance at redemption the Packers. There's no excuse for them not to be ready.

What are you drunk? You write an article on why the Packers will beat the 49ers and your primary reason is that the Packers have been “Thinking” for six months about beating the 49ers. You are probably too young to remember the 1960′s musical “The Music Man” but in it, the con-man protagonist teaches the “Think Method”. In the plot we discover that it is just a con, the “Think Method’ is BS. You will discover the same thing applies to this game. The 49ers have dominated the Packers the last two games because they are bigger, faster and meaner on both sides of the trenches and until that changes the current trend of Packer-Drubbings will not change.
