After the nation got to watch Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker dominate against the Baltimore Ravens Thursday night, New England Patriots fans will have all eyes on Danny Amendola. The wide receiver that was acquired in the offseason to replace Welker must have a big performance in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills in order to prove he is the right guy for the job.
No one doubts Amendola’s ability, especially with quarterback Tom Brady being the one who will be throwing him passes this season. It is more of the fact that there always seems to be a lot of pressure when playing in New England. Since he is replacing Welker, who accomplished feats that no other wide receiver has done over the past six years, there is no question the pressure will be on.
The good news is the Patriots have all the faith in the world in Amendola. They believe he is tough and can perform at a high level on a consistent basis, which is why there does not appear to be any worry in Foxborough.
“I think Danny is a tough, competitive guy, which playing the slot, I think that’s a quality that you really need to have in there, because you’re going to get hit, bounced around,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said, according to the Boston Globe. “Obviously our medical department felt good enough to clear him, so we signed him.”
Injuries have appeared to follow Amendola around. However, that is not something that New England can concern themselves with at the moment with Week 1 just a day away. The Bills are on tap and deserve the Patriots’ complete attention.
Expect to see Brady target Amendola early and often. The more touches the wide receiver will get right out of the get the better. Brady and the Patriots want to see Amendola succeed because it will benefit their cause, which is why they are going to put him in good situations against the Bills.
