New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons: Week 1 Matchup Will Come Down to Defense
The NFL season is officially under way and there are some very good matchups in week one. One of the most exciting matchups is the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons. The Saints and Falcons rivalry is arguably the best rivalry in the NFL right now, and the two teams and their fans cannot stand each other. This week one matchup will be a tough game for both teams and you can be sure it will be a high-scoring affair.
These two NFC South rivals have two of the best offenses in the NFL and match up very well on the offensive side of the ball. Both the Saints and Falcons have great quarterbacks, a star tight end and a tandem of talented wide receivers. However, despite the two teams’ great offenses, this game will be determined by their defenses.
The Saints had the worst defense in the league last season as they gave up 440.1 yards per game last season. However, the Falcons did not fare much better as their defense was ranked 24th in the NFL and gave up 365.6 yards per game. Both teams’ secondaries are questionable, but probably more so for the Saints. However, with the Saints switching to a 3-4 scheme, their pass rush should be much improved.
During the preseason, the Saints’ pass rush looked great at times and it gives the team hope to pressure Matt Ryan in the week one matchup. The Falcons’ secondary has already said they will be gunning for Drew Brees, but as long as he does not throw any interceptions, he should be okay.
For a game that will feature two dynamic offenses, it will ultimately come down to which defense can slow the opposing offense down. The game should be electrifying, but I think the Saints will pull this week one game out at home at the Superdome. Saints win, 35-31.
