San Diego Chargers Rumors: Will MLB Playoffs Cause A Schedule Change?
The San Diego Chargers are scheduled to play a road game against the Oakland Raiders in Week 5 of the 2013 NFL season. According to U-T San Diego beat writer Michael Gehlken, this game could be moved to San Diego. “Their Oct. 6 game against the Raiders may be moved from Oakland to San Diego to accommodate the MLB playoffs.”
There is a pennant race between the Oakland Athletics and the Texas Rangers currently being led by Oakland. The A’s have a half game lead over Texas with 21 games left on their schedule, while the Rangers have 22 games remaining. Oakland could still win the Wild Card as well.
San Diego’s last three games of the 2013 season are against divisional opponents. If the schedule is changed, San Diego will play two road games and close the season at home. If the schedule is not changed, San Diego will play a road game against the Denver Broncos then finish the season at home against Oakland and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chargers and Raiders have played 106 times in the regular season, which is tied with Denver for San Diego’s most games against one team. San Diego is 47-57-2 all-time against Oakland, but is 16-4 in their last 20 meetings, so the schedule change could be a non-factor.
San Diego finished the 2012 season with a 7-9 record while Oakland was 4-12, so this may be the start of a rebuilding season for both teams. Oakland traded Carson Palmer and will more than likely have an inexperienced quarterback under center unless they make another trade or sign a veteran QB.
Chargers QB Philip Rivers is 11-3 against Oakland with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The 11 wins are tied for Rivers’ most victories against one opponent. An MLB team caused a schedule conflict for the defending Super Bowl champions this season, and time will tell if this happens to the Chargers.
