Seattle Seahawks Should Not Take Carolina Panthers Lightly in Week 1

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks would be feeling pretty good about themselves heading into a game with the Carolina Panthers early on last year, as both teams were headed in opposite directions. But, as the season progressed, Carolina became on of the hottest teams to end the year. While they still missed the playoffs, the Panthers ended the year going 5-1 in their last six games.

In week one of this year’s NFL season, the Seahawks should be prepared for a fight with the Panthers. Quarterback Cam Newton is on a mission in 2013. He knows that there are beginning to be questions regarding his leadership ability and whether or not he’s the guy that can lead a team to a winning record.

The Seahawks boast one of the NFL’s best defenses, as well as quite the explosive offense, specifically running the ball. Sophomore quarterback Russell Wilson and running back Marshawn Lynch are one of the best — if not the best — rushing combinations in the league, quarterback/running back-wise.

Seattle must go into Sunday’s game with the mentality as though this is already a playoff game. The Panthers can’t be taken lightly, because they have some weapons of their own. Often looked at as a mediocre team, the Panthers could surprise some folks this year. Newton has one of the quickest wideouts in the league in Steve Smith and an incredibly versatile tight end, Greg Olsen. Both are favorite targets of Newton and he knows exactly how to get them the ball.

Seattle’s defense will have to be at their best Sunday as they go up against a motivated Carolina team, particularly on defense. The Seahawks’ defense only got better this offseason, and now is the time to prove it. Seattle could wind up in the Super Bowl come February, but it all starts with a win against these up-and-coming Panthers on Sunday.
