Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 1 Report Card

A lot of people are expecting a big turnaround for the Kansas City Chiefs after an awful 2-14 season in 2012. KC has addressed all of their major issues with one of the busiest offseasons in the NFL, and the new-look Chiefs are off to a good start. Granted it was against a weak Jacksonville Jaguars team, but a dominant 28-2 win on the road against any team is a great way to begin an attempt at a bounce-back season.

Special Teams:

Coordinator Dave Toub got off to a rocky start with his new squad as a blown blocking assignment led to a block and safety of Kansas City’s first punt of the season. They settled in after that with no major mistakes and a couple of nice returns. Dustin Colquitt pinned Jacksonville inside the 20 four times, helping the Chiefs win the field position battle.   Grade:  C+

Defense:

The defense was aided by some miscues by the Jags but had a brilliant day nonetheless. They brought plenty of pressure, finishing the game with six sacks, including three by Justin Houston. With a pick six from Tamba Hali, the defense didn’t need any scoring from the offense to take this game. The only time Jacksonville had a real threat of scoring was in the last minute when the game was already out of hand. Grade:  A+

Offense:

The offensive line won in the trenches on Sunday and everything built from there. Alex Smith had a nice debut, completing 21-of-34 passes for 173 yards, two TDs and no INTs, but had several catchable balls dropped by his receivers. Smith didn’t exactly put up Peyton Manning numbers, but a solid day of mistake free football is all Kansas City needed.
Grade:  B

Extra Credit:

The Chiefs were tied for the worst turnover margin in the NFL last season which was a major factor in their terrible season. Protecting the football is a huge priority in 2013, and KC won the turnover battle 2-0 on Sunday.

Overall:

After a tough start giving up the safety, Kansas City immediately bounced back and took complete control of the game. Albeit against a soft team, this was a great confidence-building road win to start the season. Grade:  B+
