San Francisco 49ers Week 1: Best Defensive Performance

NaVorro Bowman

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers made a case for having the best defense in the league, but their best defensive performer this week is All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman.  Bowman had the most tackles with seven solo tackles and one assisted tackle. The statistic that really puts him over veteran safety Donte Whitner who had seven solo tackles himself, is the forced fumble that gave the 49ers the ball back. He may not be the glaring leader with such a stacked talent pool on defense, but he leads in statistics this week.

Bowman is known for his ability to defend the run, and it was very apparent because as a team the Green Bay Packers only had 63 total rushing yards in 19 total team carries.  Though the Packers did get a rushing touchdown, it was only a two yard run.

Last season, Bowman led the team in tackles with 96 tackles and 148 combined tackles. He is still working on his pass coverage skills, but he can lead the defense with or without the other All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis who had five solo tackles against the Packers.

In the coming weeks, Bowman should have more opportunities to lead the team in tackles because next week, San Francisco faces their division rival the Seattle Seahawks.  This team also relies on the run game even though their quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 320 yards in the win against the Carolina Panthers.  Expect for Bowman and All-Pro runningback Marshawn Lynch to reacquaint themselves in next week game in Seattle.
