The NFL season has just completed its first week with two games left on the Week 1 schedule. It seems like the game that has received the most hype is the Monday night showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins.
The word that seems to be used a lot to describe this game is unveiling. Robert Griffin III is being unveiled this season after recovering from knee surgery over the winter and taking no snaps during the preseason. The Eagles and their new head coach Chip Kelly are unveiling their new offense. Kelly is considered to be one of the premier innovative football minds and his offense made him a huge success at the University of Oregon. Kelly also kept his offense somewhat of a mystery during the preseason, refusing most interviews, so this Monday night game has the feeling of pulling back a curtain and seeing something special.
Some experts seem very convinced that the Eagles will be rolling out some offensive packages that we have never seen before. At the end of the day, it’s football and it’s offense. The wheel is not going to be reinvented with what you see tonight. It should be though a high-octane, up-tempo college style and that will be a lot of fun to watch.
The storyline of this game that I am the most interested in seeing is the matchup between quarterbacks. Griffin and Michael Vick are very similar in their styles. RG III reminds me at times of a younger Vick. Mobile quarterbacks are exciting to watch because you don’t know what they might do next. It can be breathtaking seeing a quarterback like that escape from a bunch of defenders and run 30 yards into the end zone. It can be a fantastic weapon.
Events that are hyped to this extent never quite seem to live up to their buzz. I remember going to see the new Star Wars movies after they had been constantly talked about. I walked out of the movie theater very disappointed. I hope this game is not a letdown like that. This does have the makings of a great kickoff to starting watching Monday night games.
My comfy chair awaits.
