Julian Edelman Looks To Breakout in Amendola’s Absence

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Julian Edelman had a great Week 1 for the New England Patriots. Edelman, who was on the field for every three WR sets and would fill in for Danny Amendola when he would miss time in the second quarter with an injury, saw nine targets against the Buffalo Bills. Edelman would end up with seven catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns. It was a solid performance for the guy who started 2012 ahead of Wes Welker until he went down with injury.

Week 2 will bring more of the same for Edelman, as Amendola will most likely miss the game against the New York Jets after re-aggravating his groin. Shane Vereen will also be out after injuring himself during the first quarter against Buffalo. With injuries plaguing the Patriots going into a short week against the Jets, look for Tom Brady to look for his most experienced receiver quite a bit. Edelman did a good job of getting open for Brady against the Bills, especially in the red zone. For a small guy in stature, he seems to find ways to get open around the end zone, and has a knack for scoring.

Look for Edelman to be Brady’s favorite target Thursday night against the Jets, and a great option for those who have Amendola in fantasy. The Jets will most likely will be concerned with Edelman, but like Welker and Amendola, he is not a normal receiver, and outside cornerbacks always find it difficult to cover slot receivers. With Kenbrell Thomkins being the outside receiver, he will most likely be matched up with Antonio Cromartie, which will allow Edelman to work the middle of the field against a weak Jets defense.
