New York Jets: Receiver Stephen Hill Showed Improvement During Week 1
A new day may have arrived for New York Jets receiver Stephen Hill.
He began his second season on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hill caught six passes for 39 yards. There may not have been a touchdown, but it seems things are going in the right direction. This player posses physical traits like great speed and size. Drops were problematic for him last year and of course, inconsistent play from quarterback Mark Sanchez did not help matters.
Time can make Hill more polished as a target. With offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg’s West Coast offense, there now is added responsibility for this player. Rookie Geno Smith brings more upside than Sanchez, which can open up the passing game.
On Sunday, he was able to move efficiently through the air. He showed an ability to find openings in coverage while getting downfield. Not trying to take anything away, but the Jets’ other outside options proved to be scarce. None of these receptions were against former teammate Darrelle Revis, despite Hill’s claims that he would go after the Pro Bowler.
Jeremy Kerley and Santonio Holmes are supposed to be difference-makers. During their first contest, these two players combined to catch four passes. Against New England this time around, Hill can continue his progression. If he were to bring in around the same number of receptions as well as a touchdown, this would signal the start of some rhythm.
