Baltimore Ravens Sign RB Shaun Draughn

Shaun Draughn

The Baltimore Ravens addressed an issue earlier today by signing former Kansas City Chiefs RB/KR Shaun Draughn. Draughn was the main kick returner for the Chiefs last year and was used as a change of pace back for Jamaal Charles. After failing to pass Bobby Rainey through waivers, the Ravens only had two half backs on the roster. It was inevitable that someone would be brought in. It was only a matter of when.

With Draughn now signed and Tandon Doss re-signed earlier in the week, the void in the overall return game has been filled. Obviously neither of these guys has the skills or will put fear into the hearts of opposing teams like Jacoby Jones, but both should be solid in the return game. After Jones was hurt in last week’s game against the Denver Broncos he was replaced by Bernard Pierce at kick returner and Lardarius Webb at punt returner. There is no way that could have continued any longer than that particular game. Webb is the team’s top cornerback and Pierce is a very productive change of pace back for Ray Rice.

Draughn will probably not see to many carries behind Rice and Pierce, but he is a very effective short down and goal line back so he could possibly be useful in those situations. I still think the Ravens should have taken a shot on Joshua Cribbs because he could bring that fear that Draughn and Doss probably won’t. Still, these are solid moves by the Ravens considering the situation they’re in.
