New York Giants: Brandon Jacobs Signing Shows Desperation, Panic Already

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants are already nearing the panic button. After six turnovers against their division rival Dallas Cowboys, including two fumbles by starting running back David Wilson, the Giants are looking for answers.

Wilson has a history of struggling to hang onto the ball, but this year thought to have had corrected the issue. The Giants had planned on using Wilson and Andre Brown in conjunction with one another this year until Brown broke his leg and will be out for a minimum of eight games.

After the debacle Sunday night, New York was almost guaranteed to sign another back. Instead of signing Jonathan Dwyer or Beanie Wells whom they worked out recently, they opted for a familiar face.

Former Giants running back Brandon Jacobs was signed Tuesday, showing a move of desperation in a way. With Dwyer or Wells possibly being better options, New York wanted someone who knew the offense for the most part and could come in and play immediately if needed.

Jacobs, for one, is happy about his return to the Giants. After failing to earn a role with the San Francisco 49ers last year, he was not brought into any training camp in 2013 and remained a free agent up until this point.

“Whatever they need me to do,” Jacobs said according to a team statement. “Whatever role they want me to play, I’ll come in and do it. I know the offense. I know they’ve made some tweaks here and there, and I’ll do whatever I have to do.”

“The Giants have given me a great opportunity. This is where I wanted to be. These are the coaches I want to play for and I wanted to come back with my teammates. This is the place I love most.”

Hopefully Jacobs can give the Giants a lift, provided he is in top football shape. It may take a couple of weeks for him to get into the groove, but once he does Jacobs will at least provide a big goal line presence. If Wilson remains in the dog house, Jacobs could see more carries than anticipated.
