We know that Jaguars starter Blaine Gabbert is at least out for one week as he recovers from a laceration on his throwing hand, but after a less than stellar performance in the opener some believe that the job could be up for grabs. Certainly Henne believe he has a chance to unseat Gabbert with a solid performance on Sunday.
While most observers throw most of the blame on Gabbert for Sunday’s poor offensive performance, the truth is that he was just one part of what appeared to be a total offensive failure. It does not matter who is under center for the Jaguars moving forward, the offensive line and pass catchers need to play significantly better moving forward for either quarterback to have a chance to be productive.
Will the Jaguars offense look better on Sunday with Henne on the field? Probably, but that likely has more to do with the quality of opponent they are playing. However, one strong start against the Raiders should not sway the Jaguars coaches from sending Gabbert back out when he is healthy.
Prior to the season, Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley named Gabbert the starter and he has not given any indication that he plans on changing his mind. I believe Henne has a tall mountain to climb in order to force Bradley’s hand and make a permanent switch at quarterback.
So can Henne take over as the Jaguars starter? Yes, but I do not think it is very likely that it will happen.
