The New York Jets are getting set to do battle with the New England Patriots in the season’s first installment of Thursday Night Football on the NFL Network. This rivalry has lost some steam in the past couple of years, mainly due to the Jets’ losing a lot of steam themselves. The Patriots on the other hand, have remained near the top of the AFC where they’ve resided for most of the last decade. Still, we all know that anything can happen in a rivalry game.
The oddsmakers and most football fans have a pretty good idea of what they think will happen in this one, which is New England taking care of business at home. The Patriots are nearly two touchdown favorites and you can’t really disagree with the line based on the states of the two franchises. However, this game is projected to be a lot closer than it was two weeks ago.
In week one we saw Geno Smith lead the Jets down the field to a game-winning field goal. No one was predicting that outcome, and with it, comes newfound confidence for the team.
The Patriots, conversely, struggled to pull out a road win in their season opener. They also won on a late-game field goal, but their victory didn’t come without a few other losses. New England will be without star receiver Danny Amendola and tight end Rob Gronkowski, who is still recovering from his slew of offseason surgeries.
So with all that we learned from week one – who will steal the show in this week two showdown?
On the Jets’ side of things, Smith is a player some fans will point to. But considering that this will be his first career road start, and that it’s in New England, I don’t like his chances. I think the New York defense as a whole, has a better chance to standout than any one particular player on the roster.
On the Patriots’ side of things, there’s one guy I feel is primed to steal the show more than anyone else. That man, is none other than Tom Brady. Even though he’ll be down one of his top targets from last week and his favorite tight end, Brady will find a way to rise above it all. You may not be familiar with half the guys he’s throwing to, but it won’t matter.
The Pats will take care of business on their home turf thanks in large part to the play of Brady. I think the Jets will make it interesting for awhile, but there’s no doubt in my mind New England will pull away via the arm of their QB as the night progresses.
Patriots football tickets at Vividseats are still available for Thursday night’s game against the Jets. Make sure to grab a few and see which stars will his team win.
