Shoulder Surgery Likely Means the End of Mark Sanchez's New York Jets Career

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has received the unfortunate news that he needs surgery to repair a labral tear in his shoulder, and that surgery will likely end his season. The Jets should place him on injured reserve within the next few days, and they will release him after the season. This news brings about the end of his time with Jets, which began in such promising fashion.

After the Jets traded up to select him 5th overall, Sanchez was the starting quarterback on a team that went to back to back AFC Championship games. However, his play declined as the team around him did, and Sanchez proved to be incredibly turnover prone, and incapable of leading the team back to the playoffs.

Sanchez was injured on Rex Ryan’s inexplicable decision to insert him into the fourth quarter of the Jets’ third preseason game. Unfortunately for Sanchez, that will prove to be the last time he wore a Jets uniform. Sanchez will be able to find work as a backup next offseason, but he will struggled to ever regain a starting position in the NFL.

Most Jets fans are not heartbroken over this news, as they are sick of watching Sanchez turn the ball over and are excited about the future with Geno Smith. However, they should appreciate all Sanchez has done for the franchise, especially in the first two years of his career. Unfortunately, the promising start to his career never materialized into him becoming the Jets’ franchise quarterback.

No one wants to see anybody get injured, and it is unfortunate that Sanchez’s season and time with the Jets had to end this way. The Jets are now going to stick with Smith at quarterback no matter what this season, and hope the rookie can steadily improve. For Sanchez, he faces a long rehab and the challenge of finding a new team next offseason.
