In a hyped up battle between two electric athletes at the quarterback position we saw flashes from both players as to why they are unique at their position. On this night Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick got the better of Robert Griffin III.
At many points in the game, Vick ran the offense to perfection reading his keys and handing the ball off to LeSean McCoy when necessary. And when the defense dared him to throw he also beat them with his arm. Late in the game when Vick needed to run and get a crucial first down, he did just that, executing a great fake hand off as the seas parted and he picked up a huge chunk of yards.
It seems like the perfect offense for Vick giving him options on every play and allowing him not to think too much at such a fast pace. For as effective as Vick was for much of the game Griffin III was equally as bad. He looked like a man who had not played in eight to nine months. The rust was there and it was real. He was throwing off his back foot, didn’t look sure of himself on many of his pass attempts, and rarely even attempted to run.
This is not the dynamic Griffin III we are used to seeing. No doubt this won’t be a year long thing. Griffin III will eventually get his feet under him and get back to being the player that won him Offensive Rookie of the Year.
On this night Vick was the victor. Expect to see even more fireworks in round 2 with Griffin III in mid-season form and hopefully a healthy Vick. Round 1 goes to Vick. Will RG3 and the Washington Redskins respond in a loud environment at the Linc? Time will tell. Stay tuned.
