San Francisco 49ers’ Vernon Davis Will Be Key to Victory in Week 2

Even though it was San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Anquan Boldin that shined the brightest in the team’s Week 1 win against the Green Bay Packers, tight end Vernon Davis had a terrific game as well. I believe that Davis will play a bigger role in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks. The reason for this is because Seattle’s secondary will have all eyes on Boldin after he hauled in 13 receptions for a whopping 208 yards.

If anyone believes Boldin or Davis will be able to repeat their Week 1 success then disappointment is on the horizon. Fantasy Football owners banking on Boldin and Davis to carry their team this week are in for a rude awakening. This is not to say that both receivers are incapable of having a big game against the Seahawks, it is more of a fact that Seattle has arguably the best secondary in the league.

With that being said, I believe the 49ers will be able to exploit certain matchups with Davis that could carry them to victory. There is no way the Seahawks will allow Boldin to run amuck on them as he did against the Packers. However, when a defense focuses that hard on a single player it creates opportunities elsewhere.

To sit here and use the past as a reason for why Davis will be successful against Seattle is foolish. The 29-year-old hauled in just one catch for 27 yards in two games against the Seahawks last season. With that being said, 2013 is a new year. Davis picked up his game in the offseason just so he could excel in contests against talented defenses such as the one Seattle employs.

“Last year, I didn’t really work with the wide receivers as much, maybe five times in training camp,” Davis said, according to CSN Bay Area. “But I’ve been working with them all training camp so I had a chance to really detail my routes and get an opportunity to learn what they were doing. It helped me out tremendously.”
