NFL Displays Greediness By Jacking Up Super Bowl Ticket Prices

In news that’s unlikely to surprise a single football fan in America, the NFL is raising ticket prices for this year’s Super Bowl. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the league is raising prices for Super Bowl XLVIII a substantial amount. Tickets that were $1,250 last year, will now be $2,600 at MetLife Stadium. Tickets that were $950 in New Orleans last season, will now be $1,500 in New Jersey. While I automatically jump to the conclusion that the NFL is just being greedy, league spokesperson Brian McCarthy says there’s more to it than that:

“We are looking to close the gap between the face value of the ticket and the true value of a ticket to what has become the premier sports and entertainment event.”

Translation – the league realized it was missing out on extra dough after learning of what tickets were going for on the open market. For a league that brings in $10 billion in annual revenue, remind me again how that’s not greedy.

You can call this smart business and point to the fact that the New York market should increase the price of tickets, but come on. There’s no reason for this extreme price hike. A grand per ticket just wasn’t enough for these pigs, no, not by a long shot.

The only ‘good’ news is that nosebleed seats will remain at their ‘bargain’ price of $500.
