NFL Philadelphia Eagles

Brandon Boykin: Shining Star on Struggling Philadelphia Eagles Defense

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

On a day to forget for the Philadelphia Eagles‘ defense, Brandon Boykin was a rare positive presence. He was solid in coverage for much of the day, had a few pass break ups, and even forced a crucial fumble on the goal line that would have seen the San Diego Chargers go ahead in the football game.

Boykin has shown great instincts at the cornerback postion. He also has a great feel for coverage and has been, by far, the biggest play maker for the Eagles on the back end. If the Eagles had three more like Boykin in the secondary, they would be in business. Unfortunately, they do not.

The defense, as a whole, struggled mightily. They generated little to no pass rush on veteran quarterback Phillip Rivers, and were poor on the back end in coverage, making both physical and mental mistakes that saw receivers and tight ends wide open.

This is simply unacceptable for pro football players, and reminded many of last year’s weekly gaffes on defense. The game plan certainly needs to change for defensive coordinator Billy Davis. Personnel changes may soon be in order as well, particularity at safety if the mental and physical errors continue.

Nate Allen, in particula,r was woeful on the day. He didn’t make any plays to speak of, and to add insult to injury, accounted for at least two touchdowns by being in the wrong place and not being on the same page as his teammates in the secondary. Allen is now on a very short leash. If rookie Earl Wolff was at all ready to play, the switch may have already been made.

Wolff saw a lot more action Sunday and when he is up to speed, should replace the declining Allen. Cary Williams also had a poor game, drawing multiple pass interference penalties after a monster debut on Monday.

The Eagles will get reinforcements with Bradley Fletcher returning from injury. This will allow Boykin to go back to his natural slot position, where he seems to really thrive.

In all reality, this defense is at least a few pieces away from being where they need to be come Sundays. However, in the meantime, if they can even be an average unit the rest of the way, with the offense playing the way that it is, there is no telling how far this team can go.
