5 NFL Rookies Who Could Emerge In Week 3
Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

It always takes a few weeks for some NFL rookies to break through. The speed and intensity of regular season games is at a different level than it is in the preseason. The first couple of games can go by quickly, and coaches aren't willing to risk losing games by letting a rookie learn on the fly.

By this week, some of those rookies are starting to figure things out a little. They're no longer the liability they were just a few weeks ago. Now they will start getting their chance to show what they can do on an NFL field.

Some of the rookies are too good to keep on the sidelines. It was their prodigious talent that made them high draft picks. That talent is also why coaches are going to start using them more and more, especially as they get comfortable with the professional game.

There are also rookies who didn't make an immediate splash because of injury. They may have been hampered with bumps and bruises they suffered in training camp. But, now they're healthy and ready to show the world what they've got.

The NFL season is sometimes a battle of attrition. The good teams have deep rosters and get game-changing performances out of unlikely places. Getting those kind of games out of their rookies are a great way for a team to go above and beyond their expectations.

It's always fun to watch a young, talented player break through and make his mark on the league. These are five rookies who are primed to emerge in the NFL this week.

Cleveland Browns linebacker Barkevious Mingo had a good game last week in his first NFL action after sitting out a month with a bruised long. He had a sack on his first play and knocked down one of Joe Flacco's passes. This week, all eyes will be on the Browns, and Mingo will have an even bigger role in the defense.

4. Marlon Brown

The Baltimore Ravens have a real need at wide receiver. They traded Anquan Boldin to the San Francisco 49ers this spring, and lost Jacoby Jones to a monster hit by his own teammate on opening night. In steps undrafted rookie Marlon Brown. The 6-foot-5, 216-pound receiver has the perfect opportunity to step up and grab a spot in the regular rotation for the Ravens.

3. Aaron Dobson

Aaron Dobson led off his first NFL game with a touchdown catch. That was a good way to start the game, but it was all downhill from there. He's had a whole week to work with Tom Brady and get on the same page. It will be a work in progress all season, but with Darrelle Revis likely to lock down Julian Edelman, look for Dobson to get his share of receptions.

2. Dee Milliner

A rookie cover corner from Alabama, Dee Milliner has been one of the few bright spots for the New York Jets this year. He was a big part of why the New England Patriots struggled to move the ball last week. A ball hawk that has been on the verge of making big plays in his first two weeks, this could be the week that Milliner gets his first NFL interception or fumble.

1. Cordarrelle Patterson

Minnesota Vikings rookie receiver Cordarrelle Patterson has been on the field for only 11 snaps combined in his first two NFL games. Well, that doesn't include when he took the opening kickoff back 105 yards for a touchdown to open the game against the Chicago Bears this past Sunday. Head coach Leslie Frazier has come out and said Patterson will have a bigger role in the offense from now on. Expect him to have a big day against the Browns this week.
