New England Patriots Should Be Concerned With Trent Richardson Trade

Brad Mills-USA Today Sports

The New England Patriots must have gotten a little sick to their stomachs when they heard the news: one of their biggest and strongest competitors just got a lot better.

New England looks to be losing weapons left and right with Wes Welker in Denver, Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola injured and Aaron Hernandez … well, you know that story. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts went out and made a blockbuster trade to acquire second-year running back, Trent Richardson for a first-round draft pick.

This trade is huge for Indianapolis, who is trying to show that they are going to do whatever it takes to try to go all the way to the Super Bowl. They also must realize that this is the weakest that New England has ever been with their offense.

Indianapolis had a pretty big void at running back with the injury to Vick Ballard, who is now out for the season. Richardson gives the Colts a serious ground game threat, and quarterback Andrew Luck now has a much more complete offense. One weakness that the Colts have definitely had is scoring rushing touchdowns in goal-line. Richardson has scored eight touchdowns on 25 rushes. He should really help in that department.

New England really needs their injured players to come back soon or have someone else start stepping up, because this is shaping up to be a glaring weakness. When a rival like the Colts get better like they did, that should make the Patriots very concerned.

Some experts have thought that Indianapolis had a chance to potentially go very deep in the playoffs, and that was before this trade. The Colts now have a potent weapon for their running game and could make them a very serious threat in their conference. New England is 2-0, but it is a very shaky 2-0 as Tom Brady looks to be as frustrated as he has ever been in a New England uniform.

The Patriots need to figure things out, or it could be a very long and disappointing season.
