Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 2 Games, 2 Losses and Nearly $200,000 in Fines

To quote a famous animated sitcom, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are “gonna have a bad time” if they continue at this pace. The Bucs have started 0-2 with losses coming to the New York Jets in embarrassing fashion and the New Orleans Saints, again, with the game coming down to the wire.

To make matters worse, the team is already approaching a season-long limit that teams are given when it comes to players being fined. Per ESPN:

“Any team that reaches $105,000 in total personal-foul fines for the season has to pay a $50,000 fine. If a team’s total reaches $157,500, there’s another $25,000 team fine and the team also has to match all subsequent fines.”

What exactly does that mean for Tampa Bay?

Well, it was already reported that safeties DaShon Goldson and Ahmad Black were fined a whopping $100,000 and $$21,000 respectively. Now, new reports indicate that linebacker Adrian Clayborn was slapped with a $21,000 fine for his hit on quarterback Drew Brees in week two.

This puts the Bucs just short of $190,000 on the year for total fines. Where did the other $30,000 come from? Oh yeah, it was Goldson — again — for his hit on Darren Sproles, also in week two.

The Bucs are dangerously close to reaching the limit before they are fined — as an organization — another $25,000 and have to match player fines for the rest of the season. Goldson’s $100,000 fine will only count $50,000 toward the team total, according to ESPN.

So, where will Tampa Bay end up at the end of the season? That is yet to be determined. But, what we do know is that the organization’s ownership is going to have to pay a pretty penny at this rate by season’s end. And that, folks, does not bode well for a few players individually.
