Washington Redskins Could Be One of the NFL’s Worst Teams
The Washington Redskins‘ first three games of the 2013 NFL season have ushered in an era of Redskins’ football that their fans have grown accustomed to in recent years — a losing era. Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was supposed to lead the Redskins to a spectacular season, with breathtaking runs and pinpoint passing. Griffin has instead contributed to his team’s poor start, losing a fumble and throwing an interception in Washington’s 27-20 Week 3 loss to the Detroit Lions.
Griffin can’t be the only one to blame for his team’s 0-3 start. The Redskins’ defense once again proved they can’t stop anyone, as opposing receivers continue to run unmolested through the Washington secondary on their way to big plays. The Redskins entered Week 3 as the 32nd ranked defense in the NFL. There are only 32 teams in the NFL. I believe we can make our own conclusions as to how bad the defense is.
It pains me to say this, but the Washington Redskins have to be one of the NFL’s worst teams. In addition to their offensive woes and defensive nonexistence, Washington has continued to commit untimely penalties that absolutely kill scoring drives. Holding and false start penalties are the types of backbreaking calls that the Redskins aren’t good enough to overcome. Considering that RG3 currently looks rather ordinary as a quarterback, the Redskins will have to play a perfect game to win games in 2013.
That’s not going to happen, because Washington hasn’t even gotten to the brutal part of their schedule yet. They have games with the Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, and the Atlanta Falcons left on their schedule. In addition, they have five more games to play within the NFC East. It’s hard to imagine Washington winning any games against those teams the way they’re playing now.
Despite last season’s excitement brought by RG3 and the zone-read offense, Redskins’ fans have to remember that the franchise is still in rebuilding mode. There are going to be some growing pains as the team tries to take the next step towards NFL supremacy. On paper Washington isn’t as bad as they appear, but reality dictates that paper doesn’t win games; execution and a little luck at times win games. Right now, the Redskins have neither. If they don’t fix that in a hurry, a disastrous losing streak will be on the horizon.
