Philadelphia Eagles Ineffective Offensively In Ugly Loss To Denver Broncos
The Philadelphia Eagles were expected to have their fair share of struggles on defense. What wasn’t expected was for the Eagles offense to be so stunningly ineffective, especially in the red zone.
The Eagles continue to pile up yards. They approached 500 yards of offense once again on Sunday. What they failed to do was score touchdowns once they got in the red zone. Against a team that features Peyton Manning at quarterback that is a big no-no.
The offensive line did not do quarterback Michael Vick any favors on Sunday. Despite missing their best pass rusher in Von Miller the Broncos generated pretty consistent pressure and made it an uncomfortable day for Vick. At many points in the game even when Vick did have time his receivers failed to get open. DeSean Jackson was blanketed by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and the secondary receivers such as Riley Cooper failed to get any sort of separation. LeSean McCoy was also held in check for the first time all season with only 73 rushing yards.
The Eagles offense is still piling up yards, but the point total has dropped successively from Week 1 to Week 4. This is a bit of a disturbing trend. Is the league finally figuring out Chip Kelly‘s warp speed offense? It is possible, but it’s more likely that the Eagles are just not executing, especially in the red zone. It is something that also plagued them in the Andy Reid era. Yards and moving the ball are nice, but you need to score once the field shrinks and you get inside the 10-yard line.
It was a game to forget for the Eagles and their fans. Lucky for them the NFC East may just be the worst division in football. The Eagles, believe it or not, are still in this thing. However, they need to improve in all aspects of their game to have any chance of salvaging the season.
