NFL Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles Must Pressure New York Giants’ Eli Manning

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles are fresh off a horrific loss last Sunday afternoon. The team has to bounce back quickly, regroup, and prepare for an NFC East clash with their hated rivals, the New York Giants.

The Giants offensive line has looked frankly woeful this season. One thing the Eagles have failed to do for much of three games is generate a pass rush. This must change on Sunday. Veteran pass rusher Trent Cole will be dealing with a favorable match-up lining up across rookie Justin Pugh. Cole must expose the rookie and get in the backfield for the Eagles’ defense succeed.

Too many times this season we have seen quarterbacks afforded far too much time allowing them to pick a leaky Eagles’ secondary apart. If this trend continues the season will fade fast for the Birds.

Eli Manning has folded under pressure so far early in the season. His quarterback rating and completion percentages are all way down from his career averages, and he has thrown the most interceptions in the league thus far. There is one major reason for this: Pressure. Teams have made Manning feel uncomfortable week in and week out, and his porous offensive line is doing him absolutely no favors thus far.

The front seven has underperformed thus far. Guys like Cole, Connor Barwin, Brandon Graham, and even Vinny Curry have to make more of a mark on the game getting to the quarterback. Inside push from guys like Fletcher Cox and Cedric Thornton will also be a must to disrupt Manning’s timing on Sunday. The Eagles need Sunday to be the day the defense wakes up and pressures the quarterback. Their season depends on it.
