Aaron Dobson Becoming Afterthought For New England Patriots

Aaron Dobson

Sometimes things aren’t fair in life. That’s soon to be the case for New England Patriots wide receiver Aaron Dobson, who is likely to be the fourth wide receiver on the depth chart when fellow wide receiver Danny Amendola returns. And that’s not how it should be.

You can’t just look at the numbers and say that Dobson should be the odd man out. If one watches the games, then he or she will realize that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is not really looking Dobson’s way. And if and when Brady does look Dobson’s way, the rookie wide receiver is catching the ball. Over the last two games, Dobson has only dropped one pass that he should have caught. That “drop” was in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Dobson drew a pass interference call anyway.

So what the scouts have said are true. Dobson was starting to show relatively good hands. The same cannot be said for his counterpart, rookie wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins. Thompkins has been far more productive than Dobson when it comes to the box score, but he has also seen many more targets. Obviously Thompkins has more chemistry with Brady.

But what people have to realize is that Dobson has the potential to bring something that is lacking in the New England offense. He has size and big play potential. Those are two things that Patriots fans haven’t seen in a wide receiver since the days of Randy Moss. Dobson definitely doesn’t project to be anything like Moss, but he can be a tall, lanky deep threat that Brady needs to keep opposing defenses honest. You just don’t get that with any other current Patriots wide receivers.

The only way for Dobson’s full potential to be reached is if he plays. He simply cannot be factored out of the offense. No one would benefit from that, and Dobson just would end up as another failed wide receiver drafted by Patriots head coach/general manager Bill Belichick.
