Philadelphia Eagles K Alex Henery Having Very Concerning Start to 2013 Campaign
Henery has now missed three of his last nine attempts through the past three games. Yuck.
The Eagles knew that they had a special talent in Henery, as they decided to ax 12-year Birds K David Akers prior to the 2011 season in order to make room for the youngster. Akers is a six-time All-Pro who is arguably the best NFL kicker of all time, holding an array of NFL records including most field goals in a single season (44) and longest field goal of all time (tied at 63 yards).
It is certainly not time to panic just yet in regards to Henery’s future, but his latest mishaps are concerning. To Henery’s credit, all three of his missed field goals so far this season have been outside of 40 yards, while he has converted on two 40+ yarders (each 48). He is a perfect 5 for 5 on kicks under 40 yards and has punched through 10 of 10 extra points.
But after wowing spectators in 2011 as he converted on 88.9% of his field goals, an all-time NFL rookie record, and posting another beautiful 87.1% in 2012, Henery is kicking just 70% with a quarter of the 2013 season in the books.
Considering the Eagles have massive concerns on the defensive side of the ball, and Chip Kelly’s high-octane spread offense is sputtering as of late, the last thing that they should have to worry about is their kicker.
Look for Henery to right his ship very soon, as I expect the former fourth-round pick to miss just another three boots for the remainder of the season.
