The Green Bay Packers will be facing one of their harder opponents of the season when they take on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. It is a contest that many are calling the game of the week, which is realistic considering it will feature two Super Bowl MVP quarterbacks. Obviously, the Packers will have their hands full in many areas. However, what is one area in particular that Green Bay must succeed in order to defeat Baltimore?
Even though quarterback Joe Flacco has struggled this season, which is mostly due to a lack of talent at the wide receiver position, he still has the ability to get the job done through the air. For that reason, the Packers must take the ball out of his hands and force the Ravens to run.
Baltimore’s ground game has been non-existent this season. In fact, the team is averaging just 2.8 rushing yards per attempt and a dismal 77.8 yards per game. The Ravens are clearly not happy about this and they have stated that they have every intention of getting Ray Rice more involved. The good news for the Packers is that is exactly what they want.
The team ranks fifth in the NFL in opponent rushing yards per game (86.0). After holding the dynamic Reggie Bush to just 44 yards last week, Green Bay’s confidence in run defense continues to grow. It is important to force the offense to play into the defense’s strength.
At this point, the last thing Green Bay needs is to watch Flacco tear up a secondary that has struggled to keep passing yards to a minimum. That means there is no question forcing Baltimore to run will be one of the keys to victory.
