The Philadelphia Eagles and their defense is in for a huge test on Sunday. The Dallas Cowboys present a variety of challenges on the offensive side of the football that needs the Eagles’ defense’s full attention.
Let’s start with star wide receiver Dez Bryant. He is simply unguardable at times. His size, speed, and athleticism overwhelms defensive backs, and guys like Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher will need to use their size and jamming ability to disrupt Bryant’s timing in his routes. The Eagles must be physical with the young wideout and get him off of his game.
The Cowboys go three deep at receiver. They have the always dangerous Miles Austin and new up and comer Terrance Williams. The rookie has really come on as of late and his been a very dangerous slot and outside weapon for the Cowboys. Williams is quickly becoming a favorite target of Tony Romo.
Then there is the ever dangerous Jason Witten. Witten is as savvy a veteran as they come at the tight end position, and he presents a huge mismatch on linebackers and safeties with his size and route running ability. The Eagles’ linebackers and safeties are going to have to stay disciplined and not bite on Witten’s crafty moves down the field to have any chance at containing him.
Finally, Romo himself presents a huge threat. He may not be the fastest quarterback, but he is the most elusive. He consistently makes something out of nothing keeping plays alive and finding guys down field. The Eagles’ pass rush has to get to Romo and also not allow him to beat them with his feet. This will be a huge challenge.
I expect a shootout on Sunday. Both offenses have shown they can get yards and score points, so it will be the defense that gets the crucial turnover or makes the big stop at the right moment that pulls out the victory.
