What Must Tennessee Titans do to Defeat San Francisco 49ers?
The defense for the Tennessee Titans has been terrific this season. They have created turnovers, limited offenses in terms of yardage and given Tennessee’s offense a chance to be in almost every game this season. What is one thing the Titans’ defense must do if they want to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7?
The Titans are third in the league in forced fumbles (seven) and second in fumble recoveries (seven). In fact, they are only one of three teams to recover every forced fumble this season. They are also the only team in the league to score two touchdowns on defense. Their efficiency when it comes to takeaways is certainly something that has the 49ers concerned about Sunday’s matchup.
Two players in particular who must show up are linebacker Moise Fokou and defensive back Alterraun Verner. Fokou leads the team with two forced fumbles (one recovery), while Verner has accounted for four of Tennessee’s six total interceptions. Both of Fokou’s forced fumbles occurred against the Seattle Seahawks last weekend.
San Francisco has lost six of their eight fumbles this season, which means Tennessee must be ready for anything. There is no question that if the Titans are looking for an edge against a very talented 49ers team they must not look any further than trying to knock the ball loose every chance they get.
49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh understands the importance of keeping possession of the football, especially against a defense that clearly has a knack for finding ways to force turnovers.
“That’s something that’s always a special point of emphasis, always something that is vital, critical to a team’s well-being,” he said, according to 49ers.com. “But, I really think you have to this week. If it’s 10 out of 10 every week, it’s 11 out of 10 this week. It’s very important.”
Sunday’s game is important for the Titans because a win could mean a share of first place in the division.
