Baltimore Ravens: Jameel McClain To Regain Starting ILB Job Upon Return?
The Baltimore Ravens could get a familiar face back as early as this weekend. Jameel McClain had been one of the starting inside linebackers for most of the season last year. McClain suffered a serious spinal contusion in a regular season game against the Washington Redskins and hasn’t been back since. The future was uncertain for McClain, one doctor even told him that he would never play again, but that wasn’t an answer McClain would accept.
It’s taken all the way to this point for McClain to finally be cleared for not only practice, but live-game action as well. The timing couldn’t have been any better either as current starting linebacker Josh Bynes has already been ruled out of this Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with an infected finger. The starting nod could go to rookie Arthur Brown instead if John Harbaugh and his staff don’t feel McClain is ready for that much burden after being out of action for 10 months. Even if McClain isn’t named starter for this Sunday’s game against the Steelers, it could only be a matter of time before he regains his spot. Bynes has don an admirable job as the starter this year (33 tackles, one pass defended), but he has a bad habit of over pursuing sometimes and isn’t strong in pass coverage.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that McClain does get the starting nod this weekend. I believe the Ravens will want the more experienced guy in what should be a tough road divisional game. Whatever the case, it’s an absolute testament to the kind of man McClain is for coming back from a serious injury like this. Raven nation will be wishing you the best Jameel.
