Buffalo Bills Improve On Defense, Stall On Offense
At this point, fans of the Buffalo Bills must be asking themselves when their team will finally be able to put all the pieces together. Just as the organization has managed to assemble a respectable, if not fearful defensive unit, their offense has hit a number of speed bumps, resulting in a hauntingly familiar 2-4 record midway through October.
Part of the recent stagnation on offense can be blamed on injuries. CJ Spiller is an undeniably explosive running back when healthy, but he has struggled with injury issues throughout the course of his career and questions regarding his long-term durability are more than valid. This season in particular has seen Spiller saddled with a lingering ankle injury that has no doubt affected his overall production.
Heading into the season, Spiller figured to be a centerpiece in the Bills’ young, largely inexperienced offense. His lack of play-making thus far has been a major disappointment for Buffalo as they attempt to find some form of cohesion and continuity under new head coach Doug Marrone. Unfortunately for the Bills, Spiller’s injury is only the second-biggest detriment on offense.
EJ Manuel‘s knee injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for a team desperate for it’s first franchise quarterback since the Jim Kelly era. Manuel flashed a great deal of promise in his first few NFL starts, and his growing chemistry with Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods almost put the Bills’ offense on pace with the new-look defense.
Although the sense of optimism in Buffalo has been dampened somewhat by these key injuries, the expectation is that Manuel will pick up where he left off next month when he is able to return from his sprained LCL. In the meantime, the Bills will have to rely on their aggressive, opportunistic defense to keep them in games, and fans will be left wondering if and when the curse of the Buffalo Bills will be lifted.
