Poor Coaching Decision Fails Baltimore Ravens Once Again
The Baltimore Ravens are now 3-4 on the season as they lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers 19-16, in part due to a controversial decision to go for an onside kick early in the fourth quarter when the score was 13-9 in favor of the Steelers. I want to know how Ravens’ head coach John Harbaugh will explain this.
For the second week in a row, the coaching decisions are questionable and the Ravens have lost. Last week, it may have been wrong for the Ravens to go for it on the fourth down against the Green Bay Packers when the score was 3-0 in the first-half. With the onside kick decision this week, I have to say that the latest decision is even worse.
The Ravens were only trailing 9-13 against the Steelers. It wasn’t like the Steelers’ offense exploited the Ravens’ defense at will all over the field. The Ravens were in striking distance of winning that game. But, the Ravens completely failed with the onside kick, and gave the Steelers free points to extend their lead 16-9.
Let’s say the Ravens never used the onside kick at that point in time. Let’s say the Ravens kickoff instead, and hold the Steelers to nothing, and the Ravens still go down and score a touchdown as Joe Flacco did in excellent fashion. The Ravens would be leading 16-13. If the Steelers moved down the field late in the game, they would have most likely settled for a field goal to force the game into overtime.
But instead, the Ravens lose in regulation. Look, I think Harbaugh is one of the best coaches in the league, but I don’t have to agree with every decision he makes. Despite what a lot of people may think right now, I still have the Ravens going to the playoffs. However, unwarranted risks Harbaugh is taking these days are not worth it, and he needs to tone it down a bit before more damage is done.
