Cleveland Browns Rumors: Jason Campbell Could Start, Wouldn’t Be Major Upgrade

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

After the Cleveland Browns were given a bit of hope due to third string quarterback Brian Hoyer, all was lost when their new-found hero was lost for the season. As the Browns went back to Brandon Weeden under center, the Browns also went back to being, well, the same old Browns.

While Weeden has been downright bad in his time with the Browns, Cleveland doesn’t have a whole lot of options at this point to appease angry fans. But, it looks like head coach Rob Chudzinski is mulling over making a change — the only change available at the moment.

Reporters tried to get everything they could out of Chudzinski after their week seven loss to the Green Bay Packers, and according to ESPN he had this to say:

“Basically right now and up to this point is about evaluating the last game. We’ll talk as a staff later on. We’ll put the guys at all positions who will give us the best opportunity to win.”

Without saying the name Jason Campbell, Chudzinski gave everyone the feeling that that’s exactly the type of change the Browns could be in for. Sure, a change sounds good when you’re talking about putting Weeden back on the bench, but will it make that much of a difference?

From what we saw last year with the Chicago Bears, Campbell’s best days are behind him. He’s no longer as mobile as he was and simply doesn’t have the accuracy to play the quarterback position successfully. If Campbell was thrown into the starting role, the Browns may have a bit of a change of pace, but I guarantee you this: They won’t see an improvement in their overall chances to win.

Campbell posted a rating of just 72.8 last year in his limited snaps with the Bears, and the Browns offense isn’t exactly better than Chicago’s was a year ago. I would hold off on calling Campbell a savior for now, Cleveland fans. He’s no where near the quarterback this team requires to take them to the level required to win in the NFL.
